A Garage Revamp

The detached garage was previously used as a workshop and I decided to convert it into a studio that could be used as a craft or exercise room, and then decided that it would be used for now as a dorm room for my daughter during her college years. The room already had electrical and plumbing which was great. It just required some updating.

Under Construction

I had grand ideas about exposing the original brick (wouldn’t that be so cool), but that plan quickly soured when after removing all of the shelving units we found that much of the brick had been covered with cement. It turns out at some point in history there was a small fire. The soft brick had taken a beating, so we went to “Plan B” which was to add thin brick as a veneer. You know, you just want what you want right?

Repurposing

A few pieces from the old workshop were repurposed for the studio. A cabinet piece was stripped down, damaged areas replaced, sanded, casters added, a butcher block added, sanded and stained, new sliding doors made, and painted a bright new color that would add some pop to the room. This piece can roll around and is great for storage, a table, or work desk. I also took an old wall shelf and stained it to reuse for dishes.

Finished

Everything came together. A nice closet added that is large enough to house an antique dresser, and an old buffet that we inherited was converted to add a copper sink. A small refrigerator, induction plate and Keurig machine perfect for dorm living. The final finishing touches were splitting the original garage door in half to slide open and shut like shutters, and a fun owl bell mounted near the door.
