Franklin Police & Fire High School

In 2007 Franklin Police and Fire High School opened in F Q Story at 1645 West McDowell, to prepare students for college, public service careers and life success, in an award winning four year public high school.

Franklin students must contribute many volunteer hours to the community. Students have done yeoman work in removing trash and cleaning up our alleys, spiffed up streets, yards and sidewalks prior to home tour, and helped with post-home tour clean-up.

Story, in return, has funded scholarships, and introduced our industrial neighbors to the school, leading to support for the “Student Government Food Panty” (a gifting program providing food for unnourished students experiencing food scarcity at home), and met many other needs.

The Future: we’ll expand the funding that helps teachers purchase items they now pay for from their own pocket; offset student fees for pre-college testing exam programs; support the rental of graduation gowns and Honor Student accessories. Story will continue our good works and our relationships with students and staff to benefit both our school and our community.

The following videos explore the history, restoration and new mission of Franklin. Enjoy!

History

Franklin is a four-year college prep high school. It is the first of its kind in the nation; a high school that focuses on careers in public safety. 2011 was Franklin’s first graduating class of 26. Since then Franklin has grown to more than 300 students and a 2020 graduating class of 62 students.

Franklin students come from all over the Greater Phoenix Metro area. It is only one of two schools in the District that requires students to go through a comprehensive admission process. Franklin was the first school in the district to receive the National Blue Ribbon Award by the U.S. Department of Education in 2014 and the only to receive an “A” rating from the Arizona Department of Education, nine years in a row. Also, Franklin is the only school in the district that requires students to wear uniforms.

Academics

Franklin students are a genuinely motivated and an intellectually engaged group. Because of the nature of our program class schedules are highly structured with few electives available. There are seven academic periods, including advisory.

Freshman and sophomore students have a regular academic schedule. At the end of a student’s sophomore year, they choose to major in either Fire Science or Law Enforcement. These programs involve a two-hour block that includes an academic understanding of policies, procedures and techniques of Fire Science or Law Enforcement practices. In addition, students participate in rigorous physical training and conditioning program. Furthermore, students complete a specially designed Spanish language program for public safety.

Students in the Fire program also have the opportunity to earn a certificate in Wild Land Fire Fighting from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. Law Enforcement students are able to earn a certificate for Unarmed Security from the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Integrated into the program block is the first-in-the-nation Spanish for Public Safety class. This class is designed to prepare students with the language foundation necessary to function in our diverse society.

2014-2015 - 100%

Dual Enrollment
Students may receive both high school and community college credit while enrolled in high school courses that are approved to offer dual enrollment credit. All courses are taught by PUHSD teachers who are community college certified. Some dual enrolled courses require that students take and pass a community college ACCUPLACER test prior to enrolling.

Extracurricular actives
Due to the size of our student body and the restriction of our physical plant, Franklin is limited in the amount of extracurricular activities we can offer students. Franklin has no athletic or performing arts programs; however, students are allowed to take advantage and participate in these programs at any of our comprehensive schools in the district. It is important to note, that although these opportunities are made available, it is the student’s responsibility to contact the coach or advisor and arrange for try-outs and transportation.

Neighborhood Support
Franklin students volunteer annually in F.Q. Story to help with the home tour street cleanup for the vendor booths. In past years, they've also assisted in alley cleanups.
